How to make a passport or ID photo
- Choose the country and document. The official size and rules are shown, with a link to the source.
- Add a photo of yourself taken against a plain, light wall.
- Drag and zoom so the top of the head and the chin touch the two lines.
- Tap "Make my photos", then download the photo, the 10 × 15 cm sheet for a photo shop, or the page to print at home.
Good to know
Each country’s size comes from its official government page, linked next to it, and was checked on 21 October 2026. The two “Other countries” sizes are the common international standards. Rules change, so look at the official page before you print.
You get the photo itself at exactly the right size, a 10 × 15 cm (4 × 6 inch) photo-paper sheet with several copies for a photo shop or kiosk, and an A4 or Letter page to print at home, with cutting lines and a ruler to check it printed at the right size. Some offices, such as the UK Passport Office, expect shop-printed photos, and the tool says so. US visa and India visa photos also come in the pixel size their online forms ask for. Canada asks for photos taken by a photo studio, so the tool explains that instead.
Where a document’s rules allow it, you can replace the background with plain white, light grey or off-white. This uses our background remover, which runs on your device after a one-time download of about 6 MB. Many offices reject edited photos, so the tool doesn’t offer it for the UK, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand, whose rules ask for an unedited photo, and it warns you for the others. A photo taken against a plain, light wall is always the safer choice. We never retouch your face.
Questions
What size is a passport photo?
Most countries use 35 mm wide and 45 mm high. The US uses 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), and Canada 50 × 70 mm. The head size and background differ from country to country, so choose your document in the list to see its exact rules and the official page they come from.
What size is a US passport or visa photo?
2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head between 1 and 1⅜ inches (25 to 35 mm), on a white or off-white background. Online visa forms and the green card lottery (DV) take a 600 × 600 pixel photo, which you also get here.
What size is a UK passport photo?
35 mm wide and 45 mm high, with the head between 29 and 34 mm, on a plain cream or light grey background. For online applications, GOV.UK takes a digital photo instead.
Will my photo be accepted?
We size and place the photo to the official rules, but the office decides. Follow the rules shown for your document, especially about the background, lighting and glasses.
How do I print it at the right size?
At a photo shop, ask for the 10 × 15 cm (4 × 6 inch) sheet to be printed as it is. For the page to print at home, choose 100% or "Actual size" in the print settings, not "Fit to page", and measure the 50 mm line. Some offices, such as the UK Passport Office, expect shop-printed photos.
Can it change the background to white?
Yes, for documents whose rules allow a plain white, light grey or off-white background, and with a warning, because many offices reject edited photos. It isn’t offered for the UK, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand, whose rules ask for an unedited photo. The background remover runs on your device after a one-time download of about 6 MB.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Your photo is placed, cropped and laid out by your browser on your device. Nothing is sent to us.
